From Gretchen Fathauer's web site. Examples of heartbars failing, trimming mistakes,
damage from horseshoe nails, high heels and bars causing navicular syndrome,
and using hairlines for correct hoof balancing. How getting the coffin bones
ground-parallel results in harder, thicker soles; why high heels result in soft,
thin soles in the toe area. This same trim, except for a less aggressive backing
up of the toe, works on navicular as well.

Equine Health Centre Walkers Ltd.
We developed the softwalker for a racing yard in the UK for barefoot racing.
The softwalker provides a low impact surface, ideal for horses in regular training,
recuperating from injury or transitioning from shod to barefoot. The outer track
has a customised compound rubber surface which provides a remarkably durable
yet forgiving, anti-slip and porous surface. The inner track consists of smooth,
rounded granite river pebbles laid loose to a depth of 175mm. This revolutionary
surface provides a perfect mechanism for exfoliation and stimulation of the
sole. It is specifically designed for horses who are transitioning to compete
barefoot. The walker is the only one of its kind in the world and allows controlled
exercise on a 'riverstone' surface. Please visit our site: www.equinehealthcentre.com

Warning: Things can get pretty heated on some of the barefoot lists, especially the unmoderated ones. Best to lurk for a while, to get the tone of a list (which can change), before posting. Also, use common sense, severely scrutinize any advice you receive, and remember that anyone can pretend they are an expert on the internet. (Most of the real hoof experts are not posting on internet lists -- they are too busy trimming.)

Dr. Gerd Heuschmann - This outspoken German Vet is willing to take on the establishment to promote better welfare for horses. That is simply irresistible to me! He is a man on a mission: to expose the dangers of rollkur and hyperflexion and all the ridiculous "new" ways of dressage training, and turn us instead back to the tried and true ways of genuine classical horsemanship. Both his book, Tug of War: Classical versus "Modern" Dressage, and his DVD, If Horses Could Speak, are must-see for everyone.

Hoofcare Unltd at Horrell Hill Dressage
Hoofcare Unltd is a new term being used to describe the care and use of barefooted
horses in all disciplines and breeds at Horrell Hill in South Carolina. Hoofcare
Unltd is not just a trimming method, but is also a complete daily care system
that allows a horse to remain barefoot throughout its entire life. This system
can be used to rehabilitate horses from many degenerative ailments. The method
used at Hoofcare Unltd was developed and is in detail described by Dr. Hiltrud
Strasser in Germany.

of classical riding.

Dr. Andrew McLean - He runs the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre, and promotes the use of animal behavioral sciences to help develop our training systems to be more effective and more humane. His simple, direct approach has helped me, as a trainer, more than anything else I have ever tried. It blends seamlessly with both classical horsemanship and natural approaches. I highly recommend his book The Truth About Horses, and his DVD/Book set, Academic Horse Training.

Pierre Cousyn
Pierre was formally educated in Europe and is a two time graduate of the National Equitation School in Saumur, France, home of the prestigious Cadre Noir. He also spent time studying in Germany, France, Switzerland, and the United States. He has blended the best of French classical dressage with the best of modern dressage, to create what I think is perfect dressage! (and I might be biased since I am his student!)

Jean-Claude Racinet
My former teacher, he sadly passed away in
2009. He was a living legacy. In addition to his 3 previous books, "Another Horsemanship: A manual of riding in the French Classical tradition", "Racinet explains Baucher" and "Total Horsemanship", he left behind one final work, "Falling for Fallacies: Misleading Commonplace Notions of Dressage Riding". All are must-reads for serious equestrians.

Sustainable Dressage
Very interesting site explores the meaning of dressage. Especially noteworthy
is the article on Rollkur
(or riding excessively and dangerously deep for training purposes as is used
fashionably by international dressage competitors). Don't miss the many parts
to that article! This is a clear demonstration of why people might consider
dressage to be "unnatural" these days, if that's what they think dressage
means! Yikes!

Fritz Stahlecker
A very inspirational German who follows the older Classical horse-friendly ways of training. He created his own unique system of starting horses in hand, developing collection before their first ride ever takes place. His system, which he calls the Hand-Saddle-Hand method, or HSH, produces amazing results, which can be viewed on his DVD's, "In Hand Work for Young Dressage Horses" parts 1 and 2 (available in from Knight Equestrian Books). A Practical Training Guide is also available directly from him. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED. His equipment is also very high quality and well worth the money - his cavesson is hands-down the very best cavesson available anywhere today. This is a bitless method (though bits can be added later). All the reins seem confusing at first, but make total sense once the system is tried - it is phenomenal, and this is how we personally plan to start all our future young horses. (Since Fritz is in his 80's, we are delighted to look forward to so many fruitful horse training years ahead of us.) Make sure to read about his Philosophy:

Walter Zettl
One of the world's living legends, a great master of classical horsemanship.
I highly recommend his books and DVDs, as they offer the clearest explanations
of the details of classical riding available anywhere. His method is simply
the classical German system of riding, at its very finest. The horse
is treated with great love and respect at all times, and is pushed "to
the limit" for progress, but never overfaced.

Bob Marshall Saddles
Considered "treeless," but not truly treeless--they have a wooden
pommel and cantle tree, but no bars, which takes weight off the pommel and cantle
trees. You sit between the trees. They have an endurance saddle, which runs
a little wider for the horse and roomier for the rider, than their other Western
models. These are not as costly as the Balance Int. and Ansur saddles (start
at $850).
