Have a 5 year old that's always been barefoot, because I just didn't believe horseshoes could be good for a horse. Found out about the barefoot movement May 2001, attended a Martha Olivo clinic after reading the Strasser and Jackson books. Started touching up between farrier trims. Now doing it all myself on my horse, and trying to help out some of the ouchy horses at my barn. Will attend a KC LaPierre clinic in March 2002 to learn about his trim. May eventually become a LaPierre certified trimmer. Can't afford the Strasser course!

Four Paso Finos share my digs, ranging in age from 9 to 23 as of this writing (early 2006). We've gone through some founder here a few years back, which helped me develop a protocol that's effective, relatively quick-recovery, and easy to administer; it involves appropriate trimming and strict diet control. I developed the LIM Trim (Less Is More) which evolved into an excellent counter-FFS (Forward Foot Syndrome) trim. I run a barefoot Forum on Yahoo!Groups entitled "barefoothorsecare", and I'm associated with Natural Horse Magazine. (01/06)

I am new to horses & was blessed to have as my first horse a 7 y.o. Morab mare who had never worn a shoe in her life. I had planned to shoe her, but wanted to learn more about it first & she seemed perfectly happy cavorting about barefoot. I quickly learned that shoes are not only unnecessary, but harmful! Needless to say, those shoes never got put on! I am about to learn to trim my horse myself (as soon as my tools get here!) due to an unreliable farrier. I'm looking forward to the journey!

June 2000, My horse was Dx with Navicular Syndrome. In the fall of 2000 I read Dr. Strasser's book "A Lifetime of Soundness". In Oct. 2000 I took her shoes off and made the commitment to learn the trim and rehabilitate this horse. I consulted with CHCS and I attended a Strasser 3-day Basic Hoofcare seminar in July 2001. My horse is %100 sound, but it took us a year to get there. I am willing to help others who wish to help their horse.

Just started trimming out 5 year old morgan mare. She is doing wonderfully! Thank god she didn't have that much wrong with her feet. She was only shod for 2 seasons, her fourth year from May through Dec. and her fifth year about the same length of time. It hasn't taken much to be able to condition her. My friends are truly amazed. Maybe I can get them to convert! We will be trimming our 4 year old morgan geldings feet at the end of this month when he comes home from the trainers. He is currently barefoot and has only been shod one season...May through October. Hopefully he will have as little a problem as our mare! I am so excited about this! Keep up the great work everyone- those of you who help out with the education of the general horse public.

My gelding is sound and rideable, and we will start back in dressage training this summer.(He was at third level)I am continuing to attend seminars, you can never learn enough about this trim!!!

My 6 year old Oldenburg mare seemed to have sensitive feet since day one, and "sore feet" were leading to a sore back. This led to increasingly invasive and expensive equigel pads and bars shoes. This winter I pulled her shoes and tried the natural horse trim, with nearby Lisa Walker. There was none of the usual painful transition to bare feet as in the past, and she has been comfortable and moving soundly ever since, both in the dressage ring, in competiton, and out on hard roads and trails. I've purchased Old Macs but haven't needed them! I've be interested in hearing from other dressage/eventing competitors about their experiences!

Strasser Certified Hoofcare Specialist. I have been trimming barefooted horses for close to 5 years now. I was Strasser certified May 2002. I have had great sucess using the Strasser Method on all types of horses with many different problems. Even horses that have never worn shoes show great improvement in hoof quality, and quicker growth, showing me that it is not good enough just to take the shoes off and follow the natural hoof care principles without proper regular natural trimming.
I use my horses for trail riding, driving, games, and sometimes a Competitive trail ride here or there. Since my horses have been barefoot, lameness has been a thing of the past. My chronic founder mare Philly, a 19 yo morgan, has made it though her first year since age 4 with no laminitis. Mind you this has been going on for 12 years every spring and fall, despite a natural life style. Even while barefoot she still got laminitis, with shoes she was still lame. Now that she has been Strasser trimmed, that has not been a problem at all. She can be used like a regular horse, although she still requires boots on rocky terrain.
The pony, a welsh/morgan, has been barefoot all her life. Morning Star had chronic grass founder from age 4-15. Once Strasser trimmed, no more laminitis! She has 24/7 grass, with no problem! She is now being used for riding lessons and jumping, shows trail riding etc. with no signs of lameness.
Shadow, 22 yo arabian gelding - used for 4 years, shod for competitive trail riding, 10 years ago, retired. Always points off for being off behind, and constant interference marks, required splint boots and bell boots. Brittle soft hooves. Now sound barefoot. Comes though rides 100% sound in his 20's. Has never interfered again once shoes came off. Hooves healthy and strong. I am always open for questions, feel free to e-mail me. I am always happy to help. (06/07)

I never beleived that shoes could be good for a horse, and when I bought my first horse I looked into anything that was Natural. Through friends I found out about the natural hoof trim and went to one of Martha's trimmings. She makes it look easy! We know how easy it is not! I have a farrier that will trim the feet but not as they should be trimmed. I have not done much trimming but plan to change that. I live about an hour N-W of Harrisburg and about an hour South of State Collage.

Found out about natural hoofcare through posts on the ParelliNaturally yahoo group. Started barefoot w/the help of a friend, then attended the April 2002 Basic Hoofcare clinic in Virginia taught by Dr. Strasser. Denise McLain, CSHS from Ohio, is helping to rehab the horses at my barn. I trim between her visits w/hopes of trimming myself in the future. I can't wait until my horses' feet are back to normal (as nature would have them) and THEN I can show others why barefoot is best!!

My QH Gelding, Tonto, had suffered with on and off lamnesses for about 8 yrs. He was Dx with rotated coffin bones in both front feet and put in Egg Bars and Concussion pads along with a daily dose of 24 - 30 Isoxzuprine tablets. Last year (2001) he was constantly coming up lame. He was finally Dx with Pedal Ostietis and a coffin bone cyst in the Left front in Nov. 2001. I removed his shoes in Dec. 2001 and immediatly saw an improvement in his way of going out at liberty. Pat Kustra (CSHS 2002) started trimming him in June 2002. He is steadily improving to where I can ride him at the walk and a light jog with his Old Macs. Pat is helping me to learn how to trim him.

I ride my QH mare skeeter barefoot on the shorter competitive trail rides not because she cant do longer ones but because of the time constraints of my farrier business.

Been researching barefoot for about a year, and finally switched my 2 horses to a natural lifestyle. My aqha mare had a severe conformational defect from an injury in her younger years, and she was chronically lame. my farrier said she would only be moderately sound with shoes the rest of her life. I got a barefoot trim on her, she is happy and playing like a 2 year old, and I am now successfully competing her in barrel racing, which she thoroughly enjoys. I will never again have a horse shod. I became immersed in the natural horse trim in 1999 after acquiring a horse that had foundered as a 2yo. I found Gretchen's website. Struggled for a year with only phone support from Ruth Green, and then finally attended three Martha Olivo clinics. Even prior to Martha's clinics, I was dragging home all sorts of pathological problems and actually making progress (even with very little true knowledge). Thanks to the wonderful people that have made so much information available (books, internet, and clinics) everything made so much sense. I am now trimming full time and willing to bring home rehab horses. BTW, the foundered 2yo is now 6 and has never refoundered. He recently went 90 miles in 5 days totally barefoot!

My name is Erin Pearson and I live in Castleton, Virginia.  I have been a practising Natural Trimmer for the past two years, and have been a certified farrier since 1995.  I found the natural trim method in 2003 due to a foundered pony I acquired and it worked miracles for her so I decided to try it on all of mine, and then converted my business to a natural trim instead of shoeing.  I LOVE this method!  It works, it makes sense and everyone is happy. I am accepting additional clients this year for people committed to this way of life for their horses. (05/05)

I first learned about barefoot trimming from a friend of a friend who runs his polo horses barefoot, using the Strasser method. Since then I have read everything I could find on natural hoofcare, and have followed a few friends who also do different versions of a barefoot trim. I now basically do a trim very similar to Pete Ramey's method. I trim my 3 horses and 2 of my friends horses. Im looking to take on a few clients or to help anyone who is in the process of learning. I would like to join the barefoot friends group because natural hoof care has changed my life. I purchased a very sad looking 2 year old mare that had foundered and had 3/4" thick shoes on. Just the way she looked at me I knew she would be coming home with me. I had the shoes removed only to find that she was completely lame. This mare has the best attitude I have ever found in a horse. She will do anything for you if she thinks it will please you and will not show you her pain. I had her x-rayed and found that she had 3-4 degrees of rotation and almost no sole in her flat feet. My vet advised me to not ride her for a year, and then to put heart bar shoes and pads on her permenantly. He said that the flat-footed small hooves were bred into her and that there was nothing I could do. I didn't want to beleive such a grim fate, luckily for my horse. I started researching on the internet. After a few months of research I decided natural hoof care was her best chance at a better life. While searching for a practitioner in my area, I purchased a set of old mac boots. It was winter time and my mare could not move on the frozen ground without being in a great deal of pain. I put the boots on her and it was instant relief! She was running and bucking like she had been set free. I finally found Ida Hammer AANHCP at the Illinois Horse Fair and she has been trimming my horses for almost a year now. My mare was completely sound within 6 months and is 100% to this day. She has concavity and her hooves are normal in size. I have now decided to change my career and become a certified Natural Hoof Care specialist. I am just starting my mentorship and the more I learn, the more I want to know. Thank you, Ida!!!
I have been involved with horse adoptions for a couple of years and I know that most horses with the same problems usually do not get adopted, and have a grim fate - this will change all of that. (04/07)

I began researching hoofcare five years ago when my own horse was diagnosed with "undiagnosed lameness". I have seen many of the "experts" in the farriery field, and finding The Horses Hoof website was the beginning of true understanding and healing for all of my horses. Fellow boarders, seeing my results, began asking me to trim their horses. I have since been fortunate enough to be mentored by Martha Olivo and have made the decision to devote my life full time to assisting horses in the return to soundness. I am now one of four persons in the US certified by Martha to teach clinics.

Supportive and studying Dr Strasser's work. I use a local trimmer, who is not certified, on my foundered mare and "navicular" gelding. Both are doing well. Ineteresting that even with pathology we have not experienced any abcesses. I attended one Strasser clinic and the Tuft's symposium. If you are in the area and interested, please email, I will be happy to share with you!

My equine chiropractor suggested the Strasser method. I pulled my horse's shoes two months later and things have really changed. At first, Bob Creel helped me out, but it's been Ann Daimler, CSHS, that has really shown me how to trim with a (more) educated eye. I look forward to the basic and advance seminars coming up, and perhaps I'll get certified myself.

My quarterhorse mare was diagnosed with navicular in August of 1999. Veterinary treatment for her lameness included raise heels, various pads, special shoes and joint injections but she grew steadily worse. I took her to Ocala, FL to Dr. Wessner's Barefoot Navicular Clinic in August 2001 for her first trim. She is a success story, strong and sound. We now take long trail rides and are training for endurance. We are working on Parelli Level 2. I attended a one day introduction clinic. Trimming education is still on my agenda. Moved to South Carolina and farrier Patrick Eames from Monroe, NC does my trimming. This method saved my beloved Fawny.

I own a Zippo Pine Bar stallion who is a man-made cripple, as the result of vets and shoers in three states. He is now barefoot and sound on all but his right front foot, in which he suffers from laminitis. He gets around good, but that foot is a 'sinker' and requires constant trimming, which I do, myself, using the Strasser Method. I am also working with my Vet's cutting horse filly, who came back from the trainer severely foundered, with sole penetration! She has the heart of a lion, and refuses to die! She is up and mobile, most of the time, and appears to be getting better. We are hoping to save her with this barefoot trim, and will let you know how it goes. P.S. My stallion has his first three foal crops on the ground and they are tearing them up in all events at the shows!

Thanks to a friend I was introduced to Gretchen's web site, and hooked up with Nancy here in Wisconsin. I started the trim in August of 2001. Attended a two day clinic with Martha, and the rest is history. As of December 2001 my horse is sound again. In less than five months she grew a whole new hoof. I am in complete support of the trim, and trim all three of my horses myself. I will never need a farrier again and their soundness is completely in my hands now.

I have been successfully running Endurance (including 100 Mile Rides) on Barefoot horses, however, I'm picking my races & avoiding the really rocky ones right now, 'cause I can't train on the rocks. I've done 3 Clinics, one with Strasser in Fl. July 2001, & Todd Merrill Feb. 2002. I'm reading the "Big Book" right now & even more committed to promoting "barefoot" the world over. I will probably do Strasser Clinics here on a regular basis.

My lovely Friesian was imported from Holland in May 2000. He came to me with very high heels and was shod at only three years old. He foundered after having him only 1 month. The vet had him for 1 month and he just kept getting worse. We immediately started searching and thank God we found Dr. Strasser. We flew to Canada to learn from Sabine Kells how to take care of him. His coffin bones penetrated his soles. We took on the responsibility of trimming and rehabilitating him and he is as beautiful and full of life as can be! What a challenge, but it was worth every frustrating and scarey moment because now both of our Friesians have a better life. Sietze's misfortune was really a huge blessing. Don't ever let a vet or farrier talk you out of what you know is best.

My very first horse I worked on within days of coming back from the clinic was a Qh mare who had been in the back of the owners pasture who had been diagnosed with a partially torn deep flexor tendon from the coffin. This was at the Los C--------- clinic near Forth worth and the owner was told that his only option was to put her down. For 2 yrs the horse stayed in the same condition short stride and no bend at the knee. Within 2 trims 2 weeks apart the mare has been ridden since and sound. I found natural hoofcare about 4 yrs. ago when my Paint gelding's hooves were falling apart; weak, white line disease, flat, crushed heels, and ultimately his coffin bones dropped. I found Rachael Coggins, an SHP, who knew what to do. He now has lovely hooves and natural hoofcare got us there. We succeeded when the vets and farriers and trainers said we would not. I embraced this new knowledge and eventually became certified as a hoofgroom with Martha Olivo. I continue to learn from clinicians such as Pete Ramey and have successfully rehabbed another gelding, a navicular grandson of Zips Chocolate Chip. I may enter the AANHP program. BAREFOOT ROCKS! I was introduced to the natural trim June 2002. What a revelation! 18 horses have been barefoot since August 2002 and never to be shod again. I refuse to even ride a shod horse. Attended a 4 day Strasser Trimming Clinic given by Sabine Kells in November 2002 and was even more enlightened. It is catching on in our area like wild fire. We need more full-time trimmers in this area! I can pull shoes and/or do a sound basic trim in a pinch, but don't have time to do it fulltime. There is a Certified Hoof Groom in our area that I can recommend. Thank you to Dr. Strasser for all the time and research she did and passing it on to the rest of us! (12/05)

I have been trimming my six horses for just over a year. After attending a Martha O clinic I tried to get some support from vets and farriers here. I was left stranded and on my own here in Siskiyou County. This has forced me to learn to use a knife and rasp. The horses are doing great. It is very rocky here, but they will never again wear shoes. Now I am having a great time helping interested friends learn that they can do it themselves.

I was getting tired of my horses losing their shoes every single time we had an event to go to! I started going to the internet to read what I could on proper hoof care and came across "The Horse's Hoof" website. I emailed Yvonne Welz, which in turn she called me and we talked at length about "natural" hoof care. I was invited by Yvonne to come and see Inty, the subject of her founder story at which time I also purchased Dr. Strasser's books. Both my horses at the time had very healthy feet but I was SOLD on getting them barefoot. James came out and trimmed both horses for me and the rest is history. James has been extremely helpful, is very knowledgeable and sure has a way with my "attitude" plus gelding Famous!
Our gelding Famous has never had a lame day since the first trim, he walked away from James into the rocks and hasn't turned back! He loves his "shoeless" life. Our mare Dreamer was a bit ouchy in the beginning, but I simply put boots on her and away we went. I never gave up one day of riding with her. Now nearly two years later since that first trim both horses are doing great, I ride them over some of the rockiest terrain in the southwest.
I resently acquired new horses, and of course the first plan of action was for James to come out and get them started! Going barefoot was the best decision I have ever made for my horses.
Cyndi Rach, Queen Creek, Arizona EMAIL: hoovinit@aol.com
My beloved Morgan mare got laminitis and foundered in May 2000; in spite of following all vet and farrier recommendations, she worsened in August that year. A concerned friend convinced me to attend a Martha Olivo clinic that October and I was convinced this was the way to go. I learned how to do "the trim" and have been trimming my own horses ever since, and also have James Welz out monthly to help me. My "herd" also includes 3 horses that each have a club foot, and 1 navicular re-hab. The foundered mare's hooves continue to get healthier all the time, but I suspect she also has an insulin intolerance issue and she can't have pasture grass.
May 2005 update-my foundered morgan is continuing to live a comfortable, happy life with the barefoot trim and natural lifestyle. She is now 20 years old (and still the boss mare of my small herd).  Her hooves look good and she is sound for riding, even cantering and doing some small jumps (in hoof boots) She moves carefully over rocky terrain, so I think it still bothers her some, so I try to avoid the rocky areas.  She doesn't tolerate the hot Phoenix summers  well, so she now lives in Northern Az during the hot weather.  I think this is something owners (living in hot summer areas) of foundered horses should consider if possible. Not only MY own horses benefit from a natural trim and as natural a lifestyle as I can offer. Every day I am out there treating sick horses or helping folks manage their healthy horses I am talking to them about how they can get their horses TRULY sound, live longer lives and be happier in their domestication. Learning about the natural trim from Martha Olivo two years ago has turned out to be such a powerful tool in my practice and in my life! I am able to help horses ON THE SPOT when I visit them with a lameness problem. There's no waiting for a farrier to show up next week or even this afternoon...I can help that horse immediately and often prevent further damage from setting in.
I ride as often as I can, so I feel I can speak from a medical as well as a practical standpoint...sound barefooted horses are the norm for me. It is the shod horses that are abnormal and unhealthy...I feel it is impossible for a horse to be full of health with steel nailed to it's feet, and it is a physiologic impossibility for any steel shoe to be therapeutic for a horse...only harmful. Once we educate the world with what is going on and what we have rediscovered about the effect of steel on horses, we will be able to demand that this practice come to an end. To continue to bring harm to the horse will become unacceptable and viewed as the barbaric, unnecessary and reprehensible practice that it is.
Nothing I learned in veterinary school has been as powerful as what I have learned on my own about the horse's foot. I am thankful that I have come in to this knowledge and can help others and their horses enjoy better health.
I am here as a user-friendly veterinary resource for you all, and I wish you all the best.

As backyard horseperson who loves to ride and hates spending time to muck out, I set up my 'system'(15 yrs. ago) as free range for the 2 horses with open door(24/7) box stalls. In early 2001, I was introduced to A Lifetime of Soundness and with that a commitment to never put a shoe on my guys and to talk, talk, talk about the benefits of barefoot and turnout. Lisa Walker, a CHCS from Vermont, has come to our area 5 times to trim and generously share her knowledge with owners and farriers (2, so far, willing to do 'the trim'). A good friend came on board with me, and together we attended Dr. Strasser's Basic Hoofcare course in Ontario and are looking forward to returning soon for the Advanced. Husband, Al, constructed a hoofsoaking area and opening up a rocky area where I spread hay is part of the toughening up process. A pair of Old Macs, seldom used, sits in the barn 'just in case'. A bonus has been a more comfortable ride. Thank you Dr. Strasser and Sabine.

Plan to take the certification course soon. My own 12 horses do everything barefoot, including endurance racing and trips to the mountains. Four years of learning experiences with natural barefoot trimming and restoring soundness.

I have 3 equines, 1 quarter horse x appaloosa and 2 Shetland ponies, who I have been trimming since Oct 2000. Have done the 3 day horseowner and 1 day advanced Strasser courses and the 4 day KC La Pierre course and was a founding member of IBEM (Institute of Barefoot Equine Management - www.ibem.org.uk) when I lived in the UK. Have recently moved to Canada with my horses and I now have enough land to take on a few more so I am looking into setting up a small re-hab facility. Would be great to make contact with fellow barefooters in Canada. (09/05)
Hi, I live in Manitoba, Canada & learned about barefoot trimming summer/ 05. My horses were converted by our local barefoot trimmer & on their way to recovery. They have never had shoes, but the farriers always left high heel, etc..and resulting in 2 of them with contraction & 1 with club feet. I am learning the method from my farrier & trimming them myself now with her "checking up' on me. Would like to meet others who barefoot trim in Canada. We operate an equestrian campground and I teach natural riding methods. www.seasonsranch.com Barb Fenwick Email: barbfen @ mts.net (02/06)

As a natural horsemanship trainer, I never felt right about putting shoes on horses. Finally in 2003 I was introduced to the barefoot trim and received all the answers I was searching for. I am such a big supporter that I would like to know all the trimmers who are available in Ontario for referrals. I trim my own horses, but do not have time to trim all my clients too! Please email me if you are doing the barefoot trim professionally, or just love to talk about it! (03/07)

After deciding that barefoot was the best option for my gelding (who had been diagnosed with caudal heel pain/ mild ringbone), I was dismayed to find that there were no local barefoot-specialist trimmers. After months of research and hard work, I'm quite comfortable with a number of barefoot trimming techniques, and while I don't have time to trim other horses, I'm very happy to help others learn what they'd need to work with their own animals. Barefoot specialists working in Calgary are encouraged to contact me, so that I can pass their names on to interested horse owners. (03/06)

I have never been a real fan of shoeing and have not had shoes on any of my horses since 1996. (07/08)

Removed my horses shoes April 2000, after attending a horse owners basic course with Dr Strasser. Before course was hopeful that my native cross with strong, fast growing feet would cope without shoes, but thought it would be impossible for my TB with thin brittle feet. Dr S put forward such a clear and common sense case for her methods, that I felt that a barefoot life was the way forward for both my horses. They have made the transition with very few problems, thanks to trimming input from Dr S and a CHCS. Hooves have improved significantly, particularly for the TB. Both horses are sound. Did not quite manage to get ideal living conditions for the first winter, but now have 24/7 turnout, with field shelter. Am open minded about all trimming methods, but glad I have had opportunity to learn and use the Strasser technique.

I have been doing natural hoof care for almost 2 years now, I have 4 horses all of which are very gratefull to now be bare foot, and although it has been a long road for some of them it has been well worth it

Shoes taken off my horse at last attempt to cure laminitis after vet had virtually given up hope on her. With much grateful thanks to Mel Richards for all her hard work, Solo is still here and although 25, thinks she is still a youngster with her new lease of life!

I found out about Dr. Strasser's work when my older horse had reached the stage where the local vet could only offer Bute for approx 6 months and then it would be the end of the road due to Navicular. That was in November 2000. He is still alive and has gone from being unable to walk downhill comfortably to being able to keep up with my youngster. I am sufficiently convinced of the benifits that my young Arab will never be shod, and I am one of this year's crop of Strasser students. I have enough land available to take in other horses but will only accept those who are barefoot.

I first heard of Strasser hoof care from a fellow student when I attended a Parelli course with my pony last year. I have now read both books and am booked onto a basic hoofcare seminar. My pony has Degenerative joint disease (Osteochondrosis), he is only 6 years! and I would like to slow this process as much as possible and provide him with as many years of comfortable fun living as possible. I can't wait to begin!!!
UPDATE - 20 months on... A steep learning curve in holistic horse care and theory/ practical trimming but what a result - My pony (Barclay) is now sound, he has bigger hooves all round and hacks comfortably over the terrain of the Southdowns, trots happily on tarmac and jumps with enthusiasm... transition to trot/canter on rocky surfaces takes longer but that will have to wait as I'm now studying to become a Strasser Hoofcare Professional - a glutton for punishment! Have four horses. Two have been cases where vets have given up on them not knowing what else to do for them. I am lucky in that I keep them on Ann Kempton's yard where they roam over several acres and have wonderful natural living conditions. One of my horses was going to be put down the day I heard of her, just the other day she was seen cantering on the concrete drive all of her own free will. Thanks Dr.S.

Attended a basic hoofcare seminar in October 2001. I have one ex-hunter gelding of about 15 years old who is doing quite well without shoes but lacks a field companion right now. He has been barefoot for about 2 and 1/2 years.
Marie-Louise Chittenden, Equine Health Centre Walkers Ltd., UK
We developed the softwalker for a racing yard in the UK for barefoot racing. The softwalker provides a low impact surface, ideal for horses in regular training, recuperating from injury or transitioning from shod to barefoot. The outer track has a customised compound rubber surface which provides a remarkably durable yet forgiving, anti-slip and porous surface. The inner track consists of smooth, rounded granite river pebbles laid loose to a depth of 175mm. This revolutionary surface provides a perfect mechanism for exfoliation and stimulation of the sole. It is specifically designed for horses who are transitioning to compete barefoot. The walker is the only one of its kind in the world and allows controlled exercise on a 'riverstone' surface.
